Advanced Technology in use

  • Ziemer Femto LDV Z8 Laser

The doctors at Ocumed decided to invest in the Ziemer Z8 Laser in order to give their patients the best and most accurate treatment possible.
Precisely designed for corneal and cataract surgery, the FEMTO LDV Z8 provides the most advanced technology available for laser-assisted cataracy or corneal surgery.

This laser has a powerful and unique laser source to allow the doctor to individually adapt the laser energy to your surgical needs.

  • Schwind Amaris 750S excimer laser

Ocumed was the first eye Hospital in South Africa to obtain a Schwind Amaris 750S excimer laser [June 2012]. The Schwind Amaris 750S excimer laser is one of the most modern, most accurate and safest lasers used in Lasik procedures.

The Amaris boasts a 6 dimension eye tracker which ensures that every patient gets the most accurate, objective and personalised treatment.

The Schwind Sirius diagnostic apparatus is used pre-operatively and in conjunction with the laser. An outstanding characteristic of the Sirius is that it takes a topographical map of the eye that is used in determining the best treatment for each individual patient.  It also comprises of a photo being taken of the iris and then this digital photo is read into the Amaris so that the laser automatically positions it to enable the best possible treatment.

This system is so advanced that it can detect any eye rotation, especially which happens to the eye when a patient changes from a sitting to a lying down position, and then compensates to ensure accurate treatment.

Excimer Laser treatments are very successful in treating myopia (near-sighted), hyperopia (far-sighted), astigmatism as well as corneal grafts.

Approximately 32 million laser procedures worldwide, including the successful treatment of fighter pilots and astronauts, speaks of its popularity. It has also proved to be very helpful for people driving at night.

Although it is not covered by most medical aids, patients are of the opinion that laser surgery is money well spent.

  • Oertli OS 4 Phaco machine

The OS 4 surgical platform uses the laws of physics and fluidics to make cataract, vitrectomy and retinal detachment eye surgery safer, easier and more efficient than it has ever been. The core piece of the device is the three-pump system with vacuum and flow control and the innovative SPEEP pump that ensures highly precise manoeuvres. All instruments are perfectly integrated into the system: cutting-edge LED technology provides for optimum visualisation, the continuous flow cutter ensures traction-free vitreous body removal, and the fully integrated 532 nm endo laser opens up new possibilities in laser control.

  • Draeger anaesthetic machines

Our Draeger anesthesia machines offer advanced features and functionalities that can help our surgeons work more easily and efficiently. An ergonomic design and user-friendly operation are standard. The anesthesia machines offer diverse technologies, smart software applications, helpful features, decision-support tools, and superior flexibility.

  • Zeiss OPMI Lumera 700 Microscope

The Zeiss OPMI LUMERA 700 surgical  microscope gives our opthalmologists the best possible advantage while performing specialised eye surgery.

The Stereo Coaxial Illumination creates constant brilliance and brightness, anterior or posterior. This makes detail of the eye  clearly visible during operations.

It has a wireless foot control  and all cables are integrated into the system, leaving the surgeon with ample space to manoeuvre which also assists in optimized workflow in the theatre.

The integrated HD video camera provides the opportunity for every operation to be recorded in high definition, and the large HD LED TV monitor allows the theatre staff to follow the operation closely. In addition the assistant’s scope enables an assistant or assisting doctor to observe the eye surgery when assisting.
