What is glaucoma


Glaucoma is a disease normally associated with elevated intra-ocular pressure, that in the long run can cause damage to the optic nerves in the eye leading to blindness.

What causes glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a genetically determined hereditary disease. The clear liquid that circulates inside the eye, helps to maintain a healthy and normal pressure level within the eye. Small amounts of this clear fluid is constantly produced, while equal amounts of the fluid leaves the eye via a microscopic drainage system, called the trabecular meshwork. When the trabecular meshwork is blocked, the outflow of fluid from the eye is reduced, retaining excess fluid in the eye, thereby increasing the pressure inside the eye.

What is the result of untreated glaucoma?

– It gradually causes damage to the optic nerve,

– It may lead to gradual decrease of the peripheral visual fields, which if not treated effectively could lead to blindness.


Treatment of glaucoma

– Using of prescribed medication, usually eye drops, or

– Laser treatment, or

– Surgery


Specific problems concerning glaucoma

– Many patients forget to use the prescribed eye drops because glaucoma is a painless disease.

– Damage occurs progressively.

– Types of glaucoma:


  • COAG (Chronic Open Angle Glaucoma) also called POAG (Primary Open Angle Glaucoma)
  • CACG (Chronic Angle Closure Glaucoma)
  • AACG (Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma)
