Although for most people COVID-19 causes only mild symptoms, it can make some people very sick and even be fatal to others. Older people, and those with preexisting medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes appear to be more vulnerable.

After 44 years in ophthalmology and 39 years in private practice Dr JA de Lange decided to retire from clinical ophthalmology. He is however still involved in the training and day-to-day management of both practices, doctors, staff and the hospital in general.

With Dr JT de Lange en Dr CI Gouws Ocumed still have highly trained doctors and staff to continue to deliver exceptional work.

Vanaf 1 Junie 2020 het Dr. Cornelis Gouws by ons Ocumed Oog en Laser Instituut span, aangesluit.

Ons span Oftalmoloë bestaan nou uit: Dr. JT. De Lange (Jnr) en Dr CI Gouws. Hoewel Dr JA de Lange (Snr) onlangs uitgetree het uit kliniese oftalmologie, is hy nog steeds betrokke by die opleiding en algemene bestuur van beide praktyke, dokters, personeel en die hospitaal.

Meer inligting oor Dr. Cornelis Gouws:
Dr. C. Gouws is ‘n algemene Oftalmoloog. Hy het ‘n liefde vir: Okuloplastiese chirurgie, retinale chirurgie, refraktiewe chirurgie en katarak chirurgie. Hy hou daarvan om sy pasiënte te sien glimlag wanneer hulle by sy praktyk uitstap.
Hy is passievol oor sy medemens en wil altyd net die beste vir sy pasiënte hê.

Hy het gekwalifiseer as ‘n mediese praktisyn by die Universiteit van Pretoria. Daarna het hy sy opleiding in Oftalmologie begin onder leiding van Dr. F. Stegmann by die Mankweng Oog eenheid in Limpopo.

Hy het sy Oftalmologie opleiding voltooi onder die leiding van Proffessor R. Stegmann by die GaRankua hospitaal. Hy het die publiek gedien vir ses jaar by Dihlabeng Provinsiale hospitaal in Bloemfontein in die Vrystaat. Hy het ook vir 2 jaar oorsee gewerk in die Cayman eilande. Nou is hy terug in
Suid-Afrika en is opgewonde om saam met die span by Ocumed Oog en Laser Instituut te werk.

Dr. Cornelis Gouws is lief daarvoor om tyd met sy familie en ook Sy Skepper te spandeer. Hy is iemand wat baie van die buitelewe hou en sy stokperdjies sluit in: ski, “snow boarding” en “kite surfing” asook stap roetes in die berge.

Dr JT de Lange attended the annual congress of the South African Glaucoma Society (SAGS) at the Zimbali Coastal Resort from 24-26 May 2019.

The South African Glaucoma Society (SAGS) annual congress is an event eagerly anticipated by many South African ophthalmologists.

Dr. JA de Lange, Dr JT de Lange and personnel from Ocumed Eye and Laser Institute attended the 49^thNational Congress of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa. The Congress took place in the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 20 – 44 March 2019.

During this congress Dr JA de Lange gave the following three lectures:

• Theory of Multifocal IOL’s.
• The RayOne Trifocal IOL
• Significant variations between keratometric values as measured with different instruments.

The congress covered all of the latest advances in Ophthalmology, and therefore a huge success for all that attended.

Dr JA de Lange attended the International Presbyopia conference in Poznan, Poland on 9 November 2018.

He was invited as one of the world leaders in the field of cataract surgery and multifocal intraocular lenses to give three presentations at this conference.
Our academic data generated at Ocumed on this, is regarded as the biggest in South Africa and even among the biggest worldwide.

Dr Johan de Lange was invited as a guest speaker at the 24^th EyeAdvance congress held from 1 to 3 June 2018, at the Renaissance Mumbai Convention Center, Mumbai.

He presented the following five lectures at the congress:

1. 10 years’ experience with Multifocal IOL’s.
   Dr de Lange shared his 10 years’ experience with multifocal IOL’s in this lecture. He discuss all the different technical aspects of multifocal IOL’s, everything that he learned in the last 10 years, and what is required to be a successful Multifocal IOL surgeon?

2. Explanting Multifocal IOL’s.
   In this lecture he shared his experience on why, when and what to replace a multifocal IOL with?
3. InFo SAV Instant Focus multifocal IOL.
   In this lecture he discussed the specifications and characteristics of the INFO lens from Swiss Advanced Vision, and presented the results obtained by this lens in his practice.
4. ISBCS Immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery.
   In this lecture Dr de Lange discussed the advantages, disadvantages and motivation of doing bilateral cataract surgery on the same day.
5. Physiol Fine Vision trifocal IOL Fin
   In this lecture he discussed the specifications and characteristics of the Physiol Finevision lens, and presented the results obtained by this lens in his practice.

Dr Johan de Lange was invited to present two lectures at this year’s Presbymania conference held in Tel-Aviv, Israel, from 25 April 2018 to 1 May 2018.

The Presbymania Group is a group of international ophthalmologists with a specific interest in presbyopia. Presbymania was founded in 2009 by Dr. Jerome Bovet. The aim of the group is to meet annually to discuss presbyopia related issues.

Dr JA de Lange presented the following two lectures at this years’ conference:

1. Comparing Ten multifocal IOL’s over Ten years
   In this lecture he compared all the different multifocal intraocular lenses that he implanted in his practice over the last 10 years (Alcon ReStor, Lentis Comfort, Zeiss Tri, Hanita Seelens, Hanita Bunnylens, Tecnis Symfony, Alcon Panoptix, Rayone Trifocal, Physiol Finevision and the INFO lens from Swiss Advanced Vision).

He discussed the characteristics of all the lenses and also compared the clinical results and side effects obtained in his practice during the last ten years.

2. Hanita MF IOL’s
   In this lecture he discussed the specifications and characteristics of the Hanita Bunnylens and the Hanita Seelens which are both bifocal lenses. He also discussed the clinical results of the lenses and compared the results to those of other multifocal lenses.

During his time in Israel he also visited Hanita who took him through the factory that manufactures the Hanita lenses.

Dr JA de Lange is going to attend the Presbymania Conference in Tel Aviv Israel from 24 April 2018 to 2 May 2018.

He will present the following lectures at the conference:

2. Hanita MF IOL’s

He was also invited to be a guest speaker at the the EyeAdvance conference In Mumbai India from 1 to 3 June 2018. There he will give the following lectures:

Dr JA de Lange will also attend the 36^th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons that will be held in Vienna, Austria between 22-26 Sept 2018.
