During his visit to the Eye Advance congress in India, dr Johan de Lange made the time to visit the Arunodaya Deseret Eye Hospital near New Delhi in India, where he presented his results on different multifocal IOL’s.  Out of appreciation for his visit the Arunodaya Deseret Eye Hospital presented him with an award whereby he is certified as a Sight Saver in recognition of services rendered in the fight against curable blindness.

The Presbymania Group is a group of international ophthalmologists with a specific interest in presbyopia and they were part of the OSSA Congress 2016. Dr Johan de Lange was the South African coordinator of the Presbymania group and their activities during the Ossa congress from 9 to 13 March 2016 at Sun City. The congress was a huge success and everyone were brought up to date with the latest products, technology and methods used in the treatment of presbyopia.

Presently the Presbymania Group has two South African members, Dr Johan de Lange and Dr Mark Wevill (who practices in the UK).

Presbymania was the brainchild of Dr Jérôme Bovet of Geneva, Switzerland. The vision was to establish an international forum to discuss advances in the treatment of presbyopia.

In 2009 the first presbymania meeting was held in Geneva with a number of international speakers. The first three Presbymania meetings were held in Geneva, after which it was decided to link up with international congresses.

Since then, the Presbymania Group has had meetings in Moscow, Sweden, Tokyo and the Canary Islands. They’ve also met as a group in London and India. Presbymania meetings are characterised by excellent presentations and lively discussions.

Some well-known contributors to Presbymania have been John Marshall, Damien Gatinel, Tobias Neuhann, Boris Malyugin and Rupal Shah

The future vision of the Presbymania Group is to co-operate globally with national ophthalmological societies in order to share knowledge about Presbyopia.

If local ophthalmologists are interested in and prepared to contribute to presbymania they could be invited to become Presbymania members.

Membership is free and by invitation. Presbymania membership has increased steadily from ten to more than 30 members.

Dr Johan de Lange recently attended the EyeAdvance 2016 conference in India. He was welcomed with open arms and the conference was a huge success. At the conference he presented his results on three different multifocal IOL’s. He also presented 5 year’s results of Express valve implantation to control IOP in glaucoma patients.

Dr. Johan de Lange as well as dr. Robert Reid and personnel from Ocumed Eye and Laser Institute attended the 46^th National Congress of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa at the Sun City Resort from 9 to 13 March 2016.

The congress was a huge success and everyone were brought up to date with the latest products, technology and methods used in eye surgery.

Recently Ocumed Eye and Laser Institute acquired a new Zeiss OPMI LUMERA 700 surgical  microscope.  This new microscope  gives our opthalmologists the best possible advantage while performing specialised eye surgery.

The Stereo Coaxial Illumination creates constant brilliance and brightness, anterior or posterior. This makes detail of the eye  clearly visible during operations.

It has a wireless foot control  and all cables are integrated into the system, leaving the surgeon with ample space to manoeuvre which also assists in optimized workflow in the theatre.

The integrated HD video camera provides the opportunity for every operation to be recorded in high definition, and the large HD LED TV monitor allows the theatre staff to follow the operation closely. In addition the assistant’s scope enables an assistant or assisting doctor to observe the eye surgery when assisting.

Dr. Johan de Lange was recently invited as a guest speaker to the EyeAdvance/Focus 2014 conference in India.Presbymania 2014 was part of the congress and he presented his results on three different multifocal IOL’s. His other presentations at EyeAdvance  included the comparison between the results obtained with two  different laser treatment modalities, Lasik versus Trans PRK.  In another presentation he gave an overview of the various treatments available for the treatment of presbyopia.
